Holiness, Big & Small

We’re coming off a big season with all the sorrow of saying goodbye to Pastor Bob and all the excitement of welcoming Pastor Andrew.

But the Christian life is comprised of little things far more often than big ones. It is the daily disciplines, the “long obedience in the same direction,” where God molds us little by little, day by day. Oaks do not spring from the ground and touch the sky in a day, and neither do “oaks of righteousness.”

It’s also the little things where Satan first tries to gain what Paul called a “foothold” in our lives, a small grip on our heart that can drag us profoundly off-course before we’ve even noticed. Catastrophic spiritual failures, what Paul called “shipwrecks” of the faith, tend to happen only after the slow daily decay of a thousand smaller lapses.

So, this week, our encouragement is to continue practicing little acts of holiness: daily prayer and study, regular fasting, and constant attention to the Spirit’s ongoing work. As Jesus warned, we must “stay awake”!

The Master in Matthew 25 says, “You have been faithful in a few things; I will put you in charge of many,” and the Christian life is always a journey from the lesser to the greater. Every step we take, however small, is a step in some eternal direction; so, let us choose holiness, even in the little things.

Bob reminded us many times that no one drifts toward holiness. Let’s not forget it now.

Did you know that kids can be emotional? Happy, sad, scared, nervous, excited, angry… maybe all of those in just one afternoon!

God has something to say about our emotions. The Bible says that God created us in His image. That means that God has feelings too! The difference between God and us is that regardless of how God is feeling, He doesn’t sin. But He knows that we do, and He wants to help us. God knows that if we don’t rely on Him, our emotions can cause us to think things that aren’t true or act in a way that hurts others.

So, in Children’s Ministry we are spending the “Summer in the Psalms” to learn how all of our emotions, in any situation, can lead us to praise.

“Let all that I am praise the LORD”

Psalm 103:1 (NLT)
